Unit 15 Creating a small business for media Task 2

For this Task I worked with Danniella Cooper and Matthew Taylor. I wrote the parts about the Kigali liabilities and responsibilities of a business owner and the the different legal statuses of Small businesses. My part of the article was about three pages long,

The screen shot above is about the different legal statuses that a small business could have. It also starts to show the legal aspects of running of a small business which include heath and safety, fire safety regulations

and the screen shot below covers the rest of the Legal aspects part of the article. which includes legal liability and possible insurance for small businesses.

The screenshot above covers Planning Permission, contracts, Duties and responsibilities, and the UK's Employment law regarding small business

this screenshot tells is of the regulatory bodies of businesses and about any sources of advice that a small business could and would need.

Unit 31: task 4-evaluation

The feedback we received for all three films was all positive, Educating Granddad won the College's equality and diversity competition the reason why it won is because we were the only one who used filmmaking to get our point across the rest of the participants just created posters. The Anti smoking film 'Smoking Kills' was nominated in the Cut Films National Anti Smoking Competition, and our Democracy video about voting in the latest general election was approved of by the current Labour MP for Stockton South, Dr Paul Logan. The reason he liked it so much is because it actively told young people not to waste their votes.

I was production manager of a documentary about my life and how I have autism and how it affects my interactions with other people, it was a recut of a documentary I had previously done for an assignment,

The final products were very good as we won an award for 'Educating Granddad' and 'Smoking Kills' was nominated for the Cut Films National Anti Smoking Competition. And the Democracy film 'Vote' was approved of by the Local MP, Dr Paul Williams.

If I were to do this again I would have had more participation in the production of the other three videos as with two of them it was a frankly pathetic level of participation and on the third. There was no participation what so ever in regard to the production but on mine I would have had asked more questions for the interviews and tried to be more in-depth with both questions and answers in order to get a more comprehensive view of how I live my life and how it is different from everyone else's

Unit 62: digital Videos for interactive media - Task 1

Task 1- Uses of Interactive media
Interactive media has many functions. it's primary method are videos. other forms include photos, sound bites, and gifs.
the applications for digital videos include short films which are films but are roughly 10 to 30 minutes long maximum, they could be promotional material such as adverts on Television or on the internet about new hygiene product or a political campaign and trailers for new video games, film trailers their main point is to entice new audiences to go and see it by showing the viewers exciting /enticing shots that would draw them in, in between the actual game play of video games there are videos called cut scenes they are usually created through animated /motion capture or though not very often and usually it is seen with movie tie-in-games.
There are many platforms interactive media can be shown through. A person could use Emails to send a video to another as long as the video is a certain size however if you wanted to send a larger video file, the file would need to be compressed, there are numerous websites that play videos on the internet some of the most notable websites include YouTube, Daily Motion, and Vide Me.  In regards to mobile devices they can be used to view or record videos which will inevitably released on to social media. When DVD's were first released back in the early 2000's the buyer could either purchase the single disk release which just came with the movie or the double disk release which featured the Behind the scenes featurettes such as costuming, stunts which showed the production processes of making the completed film.

When files are too large to email or if you want to make it easier to upload One would need to compress the file in order to make the transference quicker. There are two types of compression Lossy and Lossless, Lossy compression is where the quality of the received video is lesser then when it was sent. when the file is compressed what happens is that partial data discarding and inexact approximations because of how the data is encoded. Lossless compression is where it remains the same level of quality and exact approximations of the data encoding from when it was sent.

The reason there is different file formats is because different platforms will only accept a certain number of formats, for example YouTube allows .MP4,  .AVI, etc. When it comes to what file format is better it depends on which platform the video is shown on for example YouTube the best file format in my opinion .MP4 but on daily motion it could that .AVI is the best format.

The Difference between streaming and downloading is that when you stream something you need a decent broadband/ Wi-Fi connection in order to watch the video's content where as with Downloading you can watch the video when ever but there is the possibility that when it was downloaded the file compression could have been a lossy compression.

As stated before different file formats work better for different platforms. also depends on the preferences of the Platform's developer and how they designed the programs that run the file.

File size is a matter of the platform as well because if a video is sent via email that it would need to be compressed and there is good chance the file's quality would be poor

Unit 31: social action and community media task 3

The mutual respect and tolerance video was filmed at 5 Bathgate Terrace, Hartlepool the filming date was January 31st
The project manager for this video was Taylor Henderson and the script was written by Kane Smith and Chloe Handley.
The video was originally going to be a comedy sketch but after a brainstorming it was changed after it was realised how some jokes could be taken the wrong way.  the filming location was either going to be Adam Mclean's home or Ben Siddle's it was decided to that Adam's home was to be used due to it being more accessible then Ben's.
There were several problems that arose in Pre-production as the filming date came closer. because one of actress  had to drop due to mock-exam.so they had to drop out so we had to find another actress who fit the bill of multiple ethnicity. another problem that arose regarding location and whether or not we were able to gain access to the location before 11 o'clock in the morning. which we were.
The crew call was for 10 AM 31/01/17 once all of the crew, actors and equipment had gathered they went to the location.
Cast:
  • Andrew Bramfitt as Granddad
  • Diannne Garland as Mum
  • Ellie Garland as Sarah
  • Dylan Ward as Jacob
  • Beatrice Andrea as Girlfriend
The filming crew was:
Ben Siddle as Boom Operator
Matty Dickens as DOP
Taylor Henderson as Director
Jess Bramfitt as Production Manager.
Shawna Cane as Make-up

As stated previously I worked as research about ethical considerations for pre-production on the shoot

The completed video was released 6th,February 2017 on YouTube.

Anti Smoking
the Anti-smoking video filmed at the Dubliners Pub, Bridge Street, Thornaby, Stockton-On-Tees. The filming date was 3rd April 2017.
The filming crew was:
  • Matty Dickens - Director
  • Jess Bramfitt - assistant director
  • Ben Siddle - Camera Operator
  • Chloe Handley - Production manager
  • Rhys Collins - Boom Operator
The cast was:
  • Sol Talbi as smoker
  • Shannon Milligan
  • Kyra Robinson
I was supposed to be Runner but since it was a small filming shoot I wasn't needed on set.

the crew call was 9:30 and filming started at 10:30. There was a problem with the interior shots regarding the lighting because the actors were sat next to a window. so the sun light was streaming through the window, apparently Matty propped his jacket in the window to stop some of the light coming through.
The completed film was entered into the Cut Films National Anti Smoking Competition for which it was nominated.
The completed film was released on YouTube on May 16th 2017

A fourth Project is a recut of my documentary from a previous assignment, the content of the documentary is about my autism and how it has affected my life and my interactions with others. The people who I spoke with and interviewed was the SEN manager at my old secondary school All Saints Academy, Mrs Liz Gaughn. I had a group discussion with my current college class, and my parents, I was the one who arranged the interviews especially the one with Mrs Gaughn as the interview had to be on a Friday evening after the school day had concluded, the group discussion happened when we had every member of the group present. the interview with parents was filmed during the winter holidays.
The original cut of the documentary was released on January 12th, 2017, despite the fact that the factual part of it ended at around the 15 minute mark the video itself was 22 minutes long. Once this as noted I made the necessary changes to the video so it was 15 minutes but the editing of the video was slightly loose and needed tightening

Unit 4: Production management report

Planning
I started planning my PMP by coming up with several different ideas. My original idea was to film a lightsaber fight in the dunes of either Redcar or Hartlepool beeches. The fight would feature the protagonist mainly running from the antagonist as they ran and fought through the dunes.
Another idea I had were to make mock movie trailers of specific genre’s which parodied all the tropes of the specific genre’s they were about, for example if it were an action movie there would be explosion, guns, corny one liners, terribly developed romances.

My third idea was to make a music video but I was indecisive of what song to make a music video for. I narrowed it down to two songs, Kiss from a Rose by Seal or “Never Gonna Give you Up” by Rick Astley.

The idea I decided on was to make a new music video for “Never Gonna Give you Up”, the story for this new video was based on a slightly different take on the lyrics of the song,  where the singer is stalking a girl after they bump into each other. The story is slightly inspired by the music videos for Robbie Williams “Candy” and Maroon 5’s “Misery”. Every time that “Rick” tried to woo the female character she would repeatedly say no to his advances but he would keep trying until the female character got progressively violent hitting him before she finally unveiled a restraining order.
However when I was making the Pitch to the rest of the film students and the make-up students I was convinced to alter the story slightly so that instead of “Rick” being progressively more injured by the female character instead every time he would try to speak with her he would injure himself in his excitement.

Two of the Make-up students volunteered to work on my film Abbey Victoria Waugh and Sophie Brignall. I met with them individually to discuss the notes and the research they had performed into the fashion styles from the 1980’s

Once I had selected my idea I had to research other songs from 1980’s in order to understand the codes and conventions of music videos from that time period including Rick Astley’s other songs. Then I decided to form a production crew. The members I chose were Matty Dickens as Director of photography, Jess Bramfitt as Script Supervisor, Matthew Taylor as Assistant Director with myself as the Director.

Once I had performed all the research and formed a production crew I then started to scout for actors, I looked through the acting students. I decided to use Connor Honeyman and Beatrice Andrea But I did consider using Dylan Rudd, once I had chosen the actors I contacted them to see if they were interested. Which there were because they came into 224, Matthew and I told them about the premise for the film and the characters, and they were willing to take part in the film.

The day of filming was to be the Fourth of April 2017; the morning of that day was slightly hectic as I had misplaced a prop and there were several other problems as well but thanks to the rest of my crew I was able to calm down and get everything in order. We shot three scenes and a voice over. The first scene that was shot was where “Rick” (Connor) the male character sees “Betty” (Beatrice) the female character chatting with her friend when someone gives Betty his number but she tears it up and in his excitement Rick smacks his face off a metal beam when he looks up he sees that Betty and her friend has left. The second scene we shot was where Rick was pinning up a “Board of Love” but he falls off of the chair he was standing on and breaks his arm.
The third and final scene we filmed that day was the scene when Rick and Betty first bumped into each other.

The second day of filming it was mainly doing pick-ups from the first day of filming such as showing Rick walking away after he first bumped into Betty and the scene when he fell off of the chair he is shown in pain clutching his arm. Then we filmed the second scene of the video when Rick was spying on Betty and another one of her friends with binoculars but when he is spotted he runs away but trips up because he was still holding the binoculars up to his face, Gaining a bruise on his face.

The third day of filming we filmed the last two scenes of the video where Rick is in a wheel chair but when he sees Betty walking nearby he stands up forgetting the cast on his leg so he falls over on to a crash mat borrowed from the dance studio. The second scene shot that day was in the upstairs beauty parlour in SRC 2 the reason for filming in there is because it resembles a hospital room this was the last scene of the film.

After much back and forth about what time and day the actors and crew were available to film, I was finally able to pin down a date it was during the May half term holiday on the second of June, unfortunately two members of my crew were unavailable due to illness and family commitments so I had to ask Chloe Handley to come in. the first scene we shot was when Rick after seeing Betty drop a scarf while crossing the road goes to pick up the dropped scarf but he fails to notice the oncoming car and then he gets hit by said car breaking his leg the last scene we shot of the video was a pick up from the previous filming day showing betty walking into SRC 2 from Rick’s point of view.
We wrapped at five Pm on the dot. And now it was just a matter of completing the editing process.

I completed the editing process on the 12th June with the help of Taylor Henderson, Matty Dickens, and Kelly Fairhurst.

To conclude I think that this project was a tremendous success and that the final edit of the completed video is my best editing yet I believe.

Thank for reading this report and I hope you enjoy the completed video.

unit 31 Social action and Community Media Task 2

There were three videos made for social action, the topic of the first one was about the "Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, the second one was about democracy regarding the most recent snap general election which was about the right to vote. and the third while not offered in the initial list was about convincing people not to smoke

I performed research for the mutual respect and tolerance regarding the ethical considerations of the video.

Unit 37: task 1 Understand Presentation Roles and Techniques Part 1

From 1920 - now, presentation techniques have changed significantly, now we have chat shows like the Jonathan Ross show on the BBC or ITV, and Ant and Dec making celebrities eating kangaroo testicles live on Television where as before and on several other programs such as the news they tend to be more serious.

Pathe News:
Pathe News started in 1910 and operated for sixty years discontinuing in 1970. They primarily produced documentaries and newsreels. the newsreels were shown in cinema and were silent until 1928. Originally they were a duration of 4 minutes and were released biweekly. These clips were filmed from a single angle/position and they would show the audience the full clip where as now there would be commentary and cutaways to the studios. In-between the clips
Notable news reels that Pathe had captured include The fatal parachute jump from the top of the Eiffel tower by Franz Reichelt.
As you can see from the clip Pathe had slowly started to including more panning shots and more cutaways in their newsreels
During the first World War the cinema released newsreels were known as Pathe Animated Gazettes and this was the first time that the newspapers had received major competition. after the war had concluded Pathe released longer and more comprehensive newsreels called cinemazines.
In 1927 Pathe sold the British branch to the now dissolved company First National. By 1930 Pathe' started to include a wide range of coverage for example sports, women's issues and entertainment in programmes such as 'The Pathetone Weekly', and 'Pathe' Pictorial'. Three years later Pathe' gained another new owner The Associated British Picture Corporation, 25 years after this Warner Bros acquired the company and it became known as Warner-Pathe'. Pathe' stopped producing newsreels in 1970 due it not being able to compete with Television but it took another ten years for the French Pathe'  to cease producing newsreels. During the newsreels run notable narrators were Bob Danvers-Walker, Andre Baruch, and Clem McCarthy.
Pathe was then sold to several more owner including The Cannon Film Group who spilt the company into the newsreels division from the it's Feature Film division. Pathe's feature Film Division is currently under the ownership of Studio Canal. in 2009 Pathe re-launched in it's own right and now it's entire archive is on YouTube for the whole world to see once more.

BBC News:
The BBC was first formed in 1922 however in order to avoid competition several newspapers publishers were able to persuade the Government to ban the BBC from broadcasting News until after 7PM. 12 years later the BBC was able to gain the rights to broadcast on it's own however it could not broadcast before 6pm until World War 2
When BBC News began televising they maintained the serious professionalism that came from it's Radio days. and they still remain professional however the morning news on BBC 1 have a sense of rapport for example the presenters have developed sense of camaraderie, they are able to joke about on occasion without loosing that professionalism however mistakes still happen.

No matter the mistakes the News readers still carry on like nothing has happened.
Notable news readers include:
  • Angela Rippon-The first female news reader in 1975.
  • Kenneth Kendall - The first visible BBC News Reader in 1955
In 1958 a report proposed how it would be better that the televised News were to get it's own newsroom along with an editor of the day

On April 20th, 1964 along with the start of BBC 2's transmissions was a new news programme called Newsroom which four years later became the BBC's first news programme to be broadcast in colour. In 1969, BBC News moved from Alexandria palace to BBC Television Centre where the BBC still operates out of today once the refurbishments are complete in September 2017.
The evening of September 14th, 1970 saw the first broadcast of the Nine O'clock news
In the mid 1970's the BBC 2 news programme was renamed to News night it soon reverted to being called Newsday when the programme moved to an early evening slot
BBC Radio 1 launched a new news service on September tenth, 1973.
January 28th, was the launch of Newsnight on BBC2 unlike the one from the 1970's which was a simple news bulletin this was a 45 minute long programme.
By 1982 technology had became sufficiently advanced enough for reporter Bernard Hesketh to report coverage of the Falkland War this was the first time that the BBC filmed a conflict digitally instead of by film.
In the following January of 1983 the BBC launched it's first breakfast news Programme "Breakfast Time" the style of presenting was quite relaxed in comparison to the BBC's other news programmes of the time.
By 1987 the BBC decided to go under a slight rebranding for it's news programmes, so that each different programme had it's own unique opening sequence and accompanying music.

10 years after this 1997 the BBC Launched BBC News 24 to provide continuous and live coverage of news from across the UK and the Globe. the following year BBC Radio News after 66 years of operating out of broadcasting house. 1999 saw the biggest relaunch with all of the BBC News channels and programmes adopting a single common format.

With the start of the new millennium came with even more changes to the BBC, to start the 9 O'clock news was moved to 10pm at night, the region based news programs lost five minute at the end of the programme. December 2003 BBC world and BBC News 24 introduced a new style of presentation which was slightly altered for the 50th anniversary of BBC television news
May 2006 bulletins received titles and set allowing breakfast to move back into the main studio for the first time since 1997.

from august 2012 to March 2013 all of the BBC operations moved from BBC Television centre to New Broadcasting house.

Newsround:
Newsround was a short news programme aimed towards children and early teens, Originally called John Craven's Newsround before his departure in 1989. The programme has run continuously since 1972, it was initially conceived as a short series mandated by the BBC's children department. over time the programme gradually developed it's own development team.

As you can see the presentation of the video is slightly more mature then what it is now like the news programmes for the older audiences. By covering slightly more political topics or other topics that the programme's target demographic would find interesting.
Where as if you look at the example above of how modern Newsround is filmed the set is much larger then how it was during the 70's and more colourful, the news reader talks about more appropriate topics for the age demographic.
Modern Newsround also has had several spin-off's for example Sportsround and Newsround Review of the Year.

The BBC had a similar style show for teens to young adults called sixty seconds which is how long the programme lasts. The programme was launched in 2001 on BBC Choice a predecessor of the now online channel BBC3. the programme ceased broadcasting when BBC3 moved to BBC Iplayer

As you can see the presentation style is like Newsround but it only has time to give brief details of about three news stories per programme.
