Unit 4: Production management report

Planning
I started planning my PMP by coming up with several different ideas. My original idea was to film a lightsaber fight in the dunes of either Redcar or Hartlepool beeches. The fight would feature the protagonist mainly running from the antagonist as they ran and fought through the dunes.
Another idea I had were to make mock movie trailers of specific genre’s which parodied all the tropes of the specific genre’s they were about, for example if it were an action movie there would be explosion, guns, corny one liners, terribly developed romances.

My third idea was to make a music video but I was indecisive of what song to make a music video for. I narrowed it down to two songs, Kiss from a Rose by Seal or “Never Gonna Give you Up” by Rick Astley.

The idea I decided on was to make a new music video for “Never Gonna Give you Up”, the story for this new video was based on a slightly different take on the lyrics of the song,  where the singer is stalking a girl after they bump into each other. The story is slightly inspired by the music videos for Robbie Williams “Candy” and Maroon 5’s “Misery”. Every time that “Rick” tried to woo the female character she would repeatedly say no to his advances but he would keep trying until the female character got progressively violent hitting him before she finally unveiled a restraining order.
However when I was making the Pitch to the rest of the film students and the make-up students I was convinced to alter the story slightly so that instead of “Rick” being progressively more injured by the female character instead every time he would try to speak with her he would injure himself in his excitement.

Two of the Make-up students volunteered to work on my film Abbey Victoria Waugh and Sophie Brignall. I met with them individually to discuss the notes and the research they had performed into the fashion styles from the 1980’s

Once I had selected my idea I had to research other songs from 1980’s in order to understand the codes and conventions of music videos from that time period including Rick Astley’s other songs. Then I decided to form a production crew. The members I chose were Matty Dickens as Director of photography, Jess Bramfitt as Script Supervisor, Matthew Taylor as Assistant Director with myself as the Director.

Once I had performed all the research and formed a production crew I then started to scout for actors, I looked through the acting students. I decided to use Connor Honeyman and Beatrice Andrea But I did consider using Dylan Rudd, once I had chosen the actors I contacted them to see if they were interested. Which there were because they came into 224, Matthew and I told them about the premise for the film and the characters, and they were willing to take part in the film.

The day of filming was to be the Fourth of April 2017; the morning of that day was slightly hectic as I had misplaced a prop and there were several other problems as well but thanks to the rest of my crew I was able to calm down and get everything in order. We shot three scenes and a voice over. The first scene that was shot was where “Rick” (Connor) the male character sees “Betty” (Beatrice) the female character chatting with her friend when someone gives Betty his number but she tears it up and in his excitement Rick smacks his face off a metal beam when he looks up he sees that Betty and her friend has left. The second scene we shot was where Rick was pinning up a “Board of Love” but he falls off of the chair he was standing on and breaks his arm.
The third and final scene we filmed that day was the scene when Rick and Betty first bumped into each other.

The second day of filming it was mainly doing pick-ups from the first day of filming such as showing Rick walking away after he first bumped into Betty and the scene when he fell off of the chair he is shown in pain clutching his arm. Then we filmed the second scene of the video when Rick was spying on Betty and another one of her friends with binoculars but when he is spotted he runs away but trips up because he was still holding the binoculars up to his face, Gaining a bruise on his face.

The third day of filming we filmed the last two scenes of the video where Rick is in a wheel chair but when he sees Betty walking nearby he stands up forgetting the cast on his leg so he falls over on to a crash mat borrowed from the dance studio. The second scene shot that day was in the upstairs beauty parlour in SRC 2 the reason for filming in there is because it resembles a hospital room this was the last scene of the film.

After much back and forth about what time and day the actors and crew were available to film, I was finally able to pin down a date it was during the May half term holiday on the second of June, unfortunately two members of my crew were unavailable due to illness and family commitments so I had to ask Chloe Handley to come in. the first scene we shot was when Rick after seeing Betty drop a scarf while crossing the road goes to pick up the dropped scarf but he fails to notice the oncoming car and then he gets hit by said car breaking his leg the last scene we shot of the video was a pick up from the previous filming day showing betty walking into SRC 2 from Rick’s point of view.
We wrapped at five Pm on the dot. And now it was just a matter of completing the editing process.

I completed the editing process on the 12th June with the help of Taylor Henderson, Matty Dickens, and Kelly Fairhurst.

To conclude I think that this project was a tremendous success and that the final edit of the completed video is my best editing yet I believe.

Thank for reading this report and I hope you enjoy the completed video.

I arrived in college at Three in the afternoon to await the rest of the filming crew who arrived soon afterwards. We then had to wait for rehearsals for the acting students to end at half Three so the actors could get there make-up on. while the actors were getting there make-up applied. my self; Matty Dickens; and Chloe Handley made sure we had all the correct equipment mainly the tripod, The camera and an SD card.

I went back and forth frequently to see how the make-up girls were getting on. once the make-up was finished being applied myself, Betty, Connor and Connor's sister went to the Green Room (SRC Room 229) once myself and the rest of the production crew gathered the equipment we set out to Trinity Mews to film the scene where Connor's character would be hit by a car. because we were filming in the middle of a road we developed a code word as warning if a car was coming or not. The code was Mississippi. Myself and Chloe took turns standing at the end of the road looking to see if a car was coming. once shooting that scene was complete we went back the College to shoot a pickup from the last time we were shooting. The shot was where Betty was walking into SRC 2 which when she was spotted by Connor's character who stood up from his wheel chair and fell over. once filming that scene was completed it was a wrap

PMP Production diary: 15/05/2017

Today I was working on Chloe's PMP as Boom Operator.
the scenes we filmed were at Stockton Riverside College and Campion Close In Ingleby Barwick.

The scenes that were filmed at SRC were set in a classroom meant to be as a therapists office.
the first scene was when another therapist comes in to discuss an persistent client and what to do about her.
The Second Scene we shot was where the therapist was having a session with her female client about her abusive boyfriend.
The third was where the therapist was speaking with her male client who is actually her female's client's abusive ex-boyfriend who is using her to find his former victim. once we were done filming at the college we departed to Campion Close in Ingleby Barwick.
The location was the home of fellow crew member Kane Smith. it served as the home for the therapist.
The first scene we shot at Campion Close was when the therapist angrily confronted the abusive boyfriend who was using the therapist's laptop to lure his victim there

04/042017 - PMP Production Diary - first day of filming

I started the morning calm and ready but slightly nervous but then I couldn't find where my binoculars were and filming was due to start at 10 and there were a lot things wrong and I was heavily panicking I felt like I was going to throw up. However the other members of the crew stepped in and help me get everything ready such as providing costumes and other solutions to the problems. the first thing I did when the actors arrived was have them read through the lyrics and watch the original music video so they would know what they were singing.
while the actors were doing that I discussed with the crew and make-up on what we would be filming and how we would be doing it. then once the two actors were done in the green room they went to make up.
The first scene we filmed was the cafĂ© scene where Connor as "Rick" would watch as the girl he likes is handed a phone number by another gent and he looks sad but "Betty tears up the number "Rick" when he sees this in his excitement bangs his nose off a pillar.
The second scene we filmed was in the green room where "Rick" was putting up a "board of love" before "falling" off the chair he was standing on. (he didn't actually fall off of the chair it's what it will look like what happened when it's edited)
The third thing we filmed was the first scene of the music video where "Rick and Betty first bump into each other and "Rick" first develops his obsession with her. Betty then left due to medical appointment but we had 30 minutes left with Connor so what we did was we filmed him singing along to the music video so we could use it in the music video

Unit 4: Codes and conventions of 1980's music videos

The things you can usually find in music videos from the 1980's include:
  • Back up dancers and singers for no reason.
  • what is known as "Dad Dancing"
  • uses of various filters
  • an audience to the singers performance who "Enjoy the music"
  • The performances aren't polished
  • there is experimentation with the look of the video, the make-up and the stylisation of the video
the men in the video tend to wear:
  • denim Shorts
  • "Shades"
  • Double Denim
  • Black Turtle Neck
  • High waisted Jeans
  • Choose Life T-shirts
  • trench coats
  • Suits
  • Mullets

The Women in 80's music videos
  • short skirts
  • glitzy dresses
  • hair tied back in ponytails or braids
  • hair some times flared out and up
  • hair is often currly or frizzie

Unit 4 creative Media PMP Task 1 I & J

Potential Production constraints and how to counter them
The Potential Constraints of the production are:
  • Scheduling - The Cast and Crew and the equipment would be required for the other PMP's
  • Location - I may not be able to get access to my intended filming locations on the filming days
  • Weather - The weather forecast of the filming days could be inaccurate and instead of it being sunny or slightly clouded, it could be torrentially raining.
how to counter the constraints:
  • Make sure you schedule the equipment, cast and crew as soon as you are available to.
  • the same as scheduling if you do not make sure you have a back-up location prepared.
  • always double check the weather forecast and bring water proof clothing to the location and water protectors for the equipment

Unit 4 Creative media PMP task 1 F: chosen Idea

My chosen Idea for my Production Management Project (PMP) is to produce a remake of Rick Astley's "Never Going to Give you Up". The reason I have chosen it is because it is widely known and it is extremely light hearted. And considering the current political climate I thought that we could all use something a bit uplifting.
For my remake it will be slightly be inspired by Robbie Williams' "Candy" and "Misery" by Maroon 5.
For the remake I wanted to make the video slightly darker in tone. The story of the video is about a woman and a persistent suitor who the lady keeps turning him down repeatedly until she starts resorting to physical violence every time the bloke appears but he keeps coming back until she files a restraining order against him.

(Edit) since originally posting this it has been slightly retooled so that the female Character doesn't notice he male character after they bump into each other and in his attempts to meet up and ask her out on a date he injures himself in various comedic ways

Unit 4 Creative Media PMP task 1 E: idea Production Requirements

Now that I have Presented my Ideas for My PMP, I will now Describe what I believe their Production requirements will be.

The Star Wars Fan Film will be difficult to produce as it will require the most special effects in post production. it would be filmed of a beach so it would possibly depending on the weather cold and windy or hot, the equipment might get sand in them. to film the short I imagine it would take a week maximum but it would take the full five weeks to edit as the lightsabers would need to be rotoscoped frame by frame. which means it will take time the filming crew would need at least four crew members to film. and two people to edit the film. and at least 2 cast members.

The Mock Trailers will be easier then the short film but they will be difficult to produce mainly editing as well as scheduling the filming could get mixed with what trailer we were filming if we were to do all three mock trailers but if we were to do one it would be extremely easy. As I said the main problem with producing this idea is the scheduling as there are other people producing their own PMP's at the same time as me. The Preproduction would only need at least two people working on the paperwork. Four people to film it, Three or four cast members. and one or two people to edit the final product.

The first Music Video the remake of "A Kiss from a Rose" by Seal would be fairly simple to produce compared to the two previous ideas. For pre-production it would need only one or two people a maximum of three. To film it would take three or four people to film. Only one cast member and to edit it would only take 2 people. the main constraint I would have in Producing the music video is the scheduling and the timing and a potential constraint is also the location and the environment of said location.

The second Music video is a remake of Rick Astley's "Never going to give you up." like the remake of the other music video this would also be fairly simple to produce compared to the first two ideas. It would require the same amount of crew to produce the music video but it would need at least 2 cast members and in comparison it would be more light hearted then the other music video remake. it would also have similar constraints like the other music video.

The Largest Potential constraint about the PMP is the weather. most weather forecasts are roughly  only 75%  accurate

Unit 4 Creative media PMP Task 1 D: Ideas for PMP

The screenshot above shows A mind map I created for My ideas for my PMP. I have six ideas for my PMP the first is a short Star wars fan film the second idea are mock movie trailers with three genres Romance, Horror and action/adventure. My third Idea is to make a music video for wither "A Kiss from a Rose" by Seal or "Never Going to Give You Up" by Rick Astley.
