Unit 16 - It's all in the edit

Editing is what makes a Film, TV show come together as you have to put together all the different shots and takes and then put them together to make the final product come together. the types of editing depends on the genre of film and television show such as fast paced editing which is used in the action, horror, science fiction and fantasy and thriller genre for example in The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring: in the final Battle where Aragorn fights Lurtz in order to protect the dying Boromir.

Another example of this is in The Bourne Ultimatum where the titular character fights an assassin in a bathroom

Another type of editing is slow paced editing which happens in the romance genre or Romantic  scenes in Films and Television shows or in slow scenes where there is no tension. For example In Lord of the Rings the Two Towers when Elrond and Arwen Discuss her fate

The purpose of Editing is to put all the various shots and takes selected by the director and put them together to make the finished product. Editing is used much like the soundtrack to set the scene with the tension and drama. Another editing technique is montages which are used to show a series of events in shortened to at least a minute. When editing is slow it is used either for exposition which explaining plot details or romantic scenes with soft slow soothing moments. and when editing is fast it is for fight scenes or to build up the tension in movies and is used with music to build up the tension even more of course there are some exceptions to this such as in dance scenes. Editing also helps the storyline by making sure that it is consistent








Editing In films was first used in the Great Train Robbery which was made in 1903and that was just used to cut to another scene nothing too fancy in comparison to modern day editing. later Montages were developed which as stated previously is the passage of time shortened into at least a minute of footage, Even though more then that was recorded. while montages have existed since at least the 1930's the first time they came into prominence is in the movie Rocky starring Sylvester Stallone. The techniques of editing include many things such as the scene transitions like fades, dissolves, (jump) cuts however one of the most important techniques is continuity because if one thing in the shot is different from how it was before it can ruin the scene it also connects with shot reverse shots and parallel editing.
